Explainer video about tax refunds
What the video shows

The video has no speech. The soundtrack is background music only.

An animation of one minute and twenty seconds, with background music and no speech. It opens on an employee at an office desk, then finds him at home at night, working on a laptop beside the bed and looking worried. Money is shown in a safe, then a tower of blocks collapsing while people in suits cling to it. A message arrives on a computer, the office closes, an income chart falls, and bills blow around a worried man in the rain. From here the video turns towards the solution: documents, a calculator and a calendar appear, then a team working through case files in an office. A family is drawn cradled in two open hands, a father sits with a baby in a nursery, and a family stands at ease at home. Three stages marked with ticks represent life events that affect eligibility, among them a birth and finishing studies. Near the end two instructions appear on screen in Hebrew: "leave your details", then "we will be in touch shortly", beside an illustration of agents at a call centre.

Check how much you are owed

If any of these has happened to you

There is a good chance the state owes you money and you never knew

  • Changing jobs

Moving between employers during the year can produce an incorrect tax calculation, which may entitle you to a refund at the end of the year.

  • Withdrawing pension or provident money

If you withdrew pension, provident fund, study fund or severance money and had a high rate of tax deducted, you may be owed a refund.

  • A break in employment

If you were out of work for a period in recent years, you paid more tax than you actually owed, and a refund is due to you.

  • An academic degree

Finished a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate? You are owed a tax refund. Graduates are entitled to special tax credit points for a year or more after finishing, depending on the degree and how long you studied.

  • Life insurance and a mortgage

Paid into life insurance or a mortgage? You can claim tax relief on those payments.

  • Children under 18

Parents are entitled to additional tax credit points, and those points are not always applied automatically.

  • Donations

Donated to an organisation recognised by the state? You may be entitled to a tax refund. The state encourages giving to registered non-profits and public bodies, and grants tax credit on donations above a minimum annual amount, under the Income Tax Ordinance.

  • A recognised expense when you claim through us

When you claim your refund through us, you receive an invoice that counts as a recognised expense for tax purposes, which reduces your own tax liability.

  • Selling a property

Sold a flat, a shop or another property? You may have paid more capital gains tax than was required.

  • A child in special education

If your child studies within a special education framework, you may be owed a tax refund. The state grants parents additional tax credit points under certain criteria, to help with the costs that come with it.

  • A medical disability

If you or a member of your family has a medical disability rated at 90% or above, on a special calculation, you may be entitled to an income tax exemption and to retroactive refunds.

  • Living in an eligible town

Living in a town on the Tax Authority’s eligible list? You are owed a tax refund, at a rate that varies according to where you live.

  • Working two jobs at once

If you worked for more than one employer during the year and did not file a tax coordination, too much tax may have been deducted. It is worth checking and claiming it back.

  • New immigrant

New immigrants are entitled to special tax benefits for 3.5 years from the date of aliyah. Never used the benefit? You may be owed a tax refund.

  • Finishing compulsory service

If you were discharged from military or national service in recent years, you are entitled to tax credit points that can lead to a refund.

  • Investing in the stock market

If you paid capital gains tax on profits from the stock market, you may be owed a refund on your investments.

Questions and answers

What is a tax refund?

A tax refund is money the Income Tax Authority returns to someone who paid more tax than they actually owed. It is issued after your income, deductions and the reliefs due to you have been reviewed.

How is the check carried out?

The eligibility check works by gathering details such as your form 106, documents from the National Insurance Institute, confirmations from pension and insurance funds, and further information about your personal circumstances. Our system lets you check your eligibility easily, in about a minute.

Is the check safe and reliable?

Yes. The check is based on Israeli tax law, and your details are handled in full confidence. The process is completely transparent, and if a refund is due to you we stay with you until the money reaches your bank account. There is no financial commitment if no refund is found.

How much money can I get back?

The amount varies from person to person and depends on your personal and financial circumstances. The average refund is around 10,385 ₪ for the last six years, though amounts can be higher or lower.

Is there a charge for the check?

The eligibility check on this site is completely free. If you are found to be owed a refund, a service fee applies to completing the claim, and it is agreed with you before any work begins.

How long does it take to receive the refund?

Once the claim is filed, the Income Tax Authority reviews the details and transfers the refund straight to your bank account. That part of the process can take between one and four months.
